Raised on a diet of punk and hiphop, Bustyaleep cut his teeth in a number of punk bands, culminating in the bass/vocals slot in Slag 79, formed in 1996 with the Barabash brothers, Paul and Wade, on guitar and drums respectively. Influenced by the sounds of labels like Victory, Ransom and Epitaph, the band released the "Proud To Serve?" demo later that year, from which one track "Cheer Up" was taken to appear on a compilation of underground punk/hardcore bands.

Leaving Canada to travel the world, he ended up in Northampton (via Australia and other destinations) in October 99.
In June 2000, he met up with Man Wid Mission, who introduced him to the Unit just at the time when they were seeking to replace the elusive Cosmic.
